My top priorities are to continue improving educational instruction for our children while keeping the Struthers City
Schools financially stable.
I will work hard in approving board policies needed to improve instructional changes in the areas of new high stake testing,
special education, school safety, the new Common Core academic/instructional standards, and third-grade guarantee.
I also will continue to tackle the tough problems regarding
school Funding-The uncertain state funding model, unfunded mandates, voucher programs/charter schools, and balancing school
revenues and expenses.
School districts are like individuals and families on fixed incomes. School districts receive around 7.4 percent from the
federal government, 47 percent from local property taxes, and 45.6 percent from the state. All three of the above mention
funding sources are reluctant or unable to increase funding and are more likely to cut funding in the future.
Therefore, boards of education must react like individuals and families on fixed incomes by finding ways to cut excessive
spending.
We can not continue to ask local taxpayers to fund our schools if we can not show them we are doing everything in our power
to cut excessive spending as well.
